Cleveland Public Library Celebrates the Love of Literacy During Read Across America Day
On Monday, March 2, the Library will honor National Read Across America Day with events at Main Library and local branches
Cleveland Public Library is celebrating National Read Across America Day on Monday, March 2 by encouraging everyone to pick up a favorite book at their local library.
In honor of this special day, Cleveland Public Library Executive Director & CEO Felton Thomas, Jr. will read to school children at 10:30 a.m. at the Main Library in the Youth Services Department, 4th Floor.
The National Education Association (NEA) created Read Across America in 1998 to encourage parents and teachers to celebrate the joy of reading and it has been celebrated annually ever since. NEA expects more than 45 million people to pick up a book and read. In Northeast Ohio, thousands of children are expected to participate in book readings and discussions in libraries, classrooms, and community organizations.
Cleveland Public Library is challenging our community to engage in reading whether it’s a traditional book, a digital book or an audiobook. “Reading brings families and people together in special ways. It also develops the mind and helps us learn and understand others,” said Felton Thomas, Jr., Executive Director and CEO of Cleveland Public Library. “The lessons are endless when we open a book and explore what’s inside.”
This year, the Library is recommending books that showcase diversity. “It’s important that children see themselves reflected in literature,” said Dr. Sadie Winlock, Chief Equity, Education and Engagement Officer at Cleveland Public Library. “We want people of all ages to experience new adventures and learn about characters different than them.”
If you’re in search of a good read, Cleveland Public Library has a list of recommended titles for all ages. Visit the list and then check it out at your local branch or listen to it with an audiobook. You can access audiobooks through OverDrive.
The Library will host book readings and fun crafts for children for Read Across America Day. Visit CPL.org for a complete list of events and other family fun literacy activities.
