Homework Databases

America: History & Life (CPL Cardholders)

America: History and Life is the leading index of literature covering the history, culture and current affairs of the United States and Canada, from prehistory to the present. Begun in 1964, this database features indexing for 1,700 journals, as well as citations and links to book and media reviews. Strong English-language journal coverage is balanced by an international perspective on topics and events, including abstracts in English of articles published in more than 40 languages. (For world history subjects, use the Historical Abstracts database.)


Biography Reference Bank (formerly Biographies Plus Illustrated)

More than 72,000 biographies and obituaries and more than 20,000 photographs of the subjects. Many of the biographies are enhanced with full text, abstracts, and citations. The biographies are searchable by name, profession, title, place of origin, gender, race/ethnicity, titles of works, date of birth, date of death, keyword, and presence of images.


For Students Online (CPL Cardholders)

Gale Reference Ebooks (formerly Gale Virtual Reference Library) – This resource collects more than 115 volumes from such critically laudedFor Students titles as Drama for Students, Novels for Students, Poetry for Students and Short Stories for Students. Volumes in each series explore the most often studied works of literature in detail, providing author information; plot summaries; discussions of principal themes, plot, characters, setting, etc.; age-appropriate historical and cultural commentary; and full text criticism.


Gale Encyclopedia of Multicultural America (CPL Cardholders)

Gale Reference Ebooks (formerly Gale Virtual Reference Library) – Contains 8,000 to 12,000 word essays on specific culture groups in the United States, emphasizing religions, holidays, customs, and languages in addition to providing information on historical background and settlement patterns. Also covers ethnoreligious groups such as Jews, Chaldeans, and Amish. Each essay lists organizations and research centers; name, address, and contact information for periodicals, radio, and television stations; and a further readings section.


Geo-Data (CPL Cardholders)

Gale Reference Ebooks (formerly Gale Virtual Reference Library) – Entries describe the physical geography of every nation and dependency on Earth. Physical features, climate, and vegetation are discussed in detail using a consistent set of rubrics. Every entry features a physical relief map designed to illuminate the text of the entry. A World Rankings appendix includes dozens of tables ranking major features of the Earth, such as largest river by length and volume, tallest mountains by continent, and deepest oceans. Includes a glossary of geographical and geological terms.


Historical Abstracts (CPL Cardholders)

Historical Abstracts is the leading index of literature covering world history (excluding the U.S. and Canada) for the period 1450 to the present. Begun in 1955, Historical Abstracts features more than 700,000 concise abstracts and citations to journal articles (many with links to full-text), books and dissertations on a diverse range of world history subjects. Each year the compilers of this database add more than 20,000 new abstracts and citations after screening more than 1,700 journal titles published worldwide for articles, books and dissertations of interest to historians. (For U.S. and Canadian history, use the America: History and Life database.)


MAS Ultra – School Edition

Designed specifically for high school libraries, this database provides full text for more than 700 popular general interest and current events publications with information dating as far back as 1975 for key magazines. MAS Ultra School Edition also provides more than 500 full text pamphlets, more than 350 full text reference books, 84,011 biographies, 83,472 primary source documents, and an Image Collection of 192,999 photos, maps and flags. This database is updated daily via EBSCOhost.


Middle Search Plus

Middle Search Plus provides full text for nearly 140 popular magazines for middle and jr. high school research. All full text articles included in the database are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexiles), and full text information dates as far back as 1990. Middle Search Plus also contains 84,011 biographies, 83,472 primary source documents, and an Image Collection of 192,999 photos, maps and flags. This database is updated daily on EBSCOhost.


Nonfiction Classics for Students (CPL Cardholders)

Gale Reference Ebooks (formerly Gale Virtual Reference Library) – Provides in-depth literary and historical background on the most commonly studied nonfiction essays, books, biographies, and memoirs in a streamlined, easy-to-use format. Covering 15-20 works per volume, this reference series gives high-school and undergraduate students an ideal starting point for class assignments, term papers, and special projects.


Oxford English Dictionary (CPL Cardholders)

The Oxford English Dictionary is a historical dictionary of English, covering the language from the earliest times to the present day. It aims to show not only the current meanings of words, but also to trace their development through time. Entries contain detailed etymological analysis, and are illustrated by quotations from a wide range of English language sources from around the world, making the OED a unique historical record.


Worldmark Encyclopedia of the Nations (CPL Cardholders)

Gale Reference Ebooks (formerly Gale Virtual Reference Library) – Presents easy-to-understand information on 200 countries and dependencies from around the world. Entries discuss a variety of topics in detail, from banking and securities to climate, from government data to demographic statistics. Also includes biographical essays on national leaders.
