About Walz Branch
Walz Branch serves the diverse Detroit-Shoreway community. This dynamic area is comprised of a range of new and old: life-long residents living side-by-side with new immigrants, and newly constructed condominiums built near historic homes.
History & Architecture
Walz Branch is named for Dr. Frederick Wilhelm Walz, a native west side Clevelander who practiced medicine and served as a city councilman, among other achievements. Upon his death in 1945, Walz left his property—his home, his office, and two other buildings—to Cleveland Public Library. His bequest is celebrated as creating the first public library in the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood.
Today, Walz Branch is a two-story building built into a hill that has a roof with over-hung eaves and flat brackets, giving a house-like appearance on the busy commercial street of Detroit Avenue. The branch opened in 1967 after obtaining updates designed by Hoag-Wismar-Henderson Associates. The interior features an open plan, indirect lighting, paneled walls and a brick interior. Windows from the clerestory floods the interior with warm natural light. Walz is filled with 9,600 square feet of fixtures, materials, and meeting spaces.
